Fall 2010 construction is anticipated for the Heather Drive/Prices Fork Road Traffic Signal Replacement project. Upon completion, this signal will have full pedestrian phase actuation and meet the town’s most current standards for traffic signal equipment. A contract has been negotiated and awarded to the firm of Mattern and Craig to provide survey and engineering design services for sidewalk construction projects along Country Club Drive, New Kent Road, Willard Drive and Owens Street. These projects are funded by Town funds matched with VDOT funds. Construction of these sidewalks is anticipated to be bid in Winter of 2010/11 for Spring 2011 construction.

Design is complete and easement acquisition is underway for the sidewalk improvements funded through this 2009 Federal grant award in the vicinity of Gilbert Linkous Elementary School. Construction is anticipated to be bid in March for Summer 2010 construction. In addition, final review of 2010 grant applications is underway by the Virginia Safe Routes to School program. The Town’s Safe Routes to School committee applied for funds to construct sidewalk improvements in 2010 in the vicinity of Harding Elementary. We anticipate a Safe Routes to School committee will get underway soon to consider requests for improvements in the vicinity of Margaret Beeks Elementary for the 2011 funding cycle.

The Storm Water Task Force has completed their work and will be presenting their recommendations to Town Council on April 6, 2010. To support their work, the Town has received an analysis of the impervious area per lot within the Town boundaries. This analysis was performed as a part of the Town’s aerial photography update.

Town staff have been very involved in preparation for the 2010 Census. Town staff have been coordinating with Virginia Tech and Census planners. It is anticipated that census surveys will be mailed out in Town on March 15 with a return request by mid April. Census staff will physically visit those that do not return the survey. Significant planning and coordination with Virginia Tech has gone into this effort to assure the students are fully accounted for, in addition to all other Town residents. The Parks and Recreation Department is completing their Summer program schedule for camps and activities. The next brochure will cover activities from May-August and will be mailed to citizens in early May. The Department is also continuing to assist with re-arranging classes and activity spaces that have been impacted by the new High School schedule.
