I am sorry for the late posting, I was in Richmond yesterday accepting an award on behalf of the Town. More about the award later this week.

Here is today’s work session agenda.

Other items of note from this last week:

Wayfinding Signs Direct Visitors and Showcase Town Amenities

The Town of Blacksburg is excited to announce the installation of new wayfinding signs in Downtown and at the entrance to Virginia Tech’s Corporate Research Center, the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the Virginia Tech-Montgomery Executive Airport. The signs measure 3’-2” by 5’ tall and will be mounted on the Washingtonian pedestal base featured by the light poles Downtown.

The information provided on these signs direct visitors to the Town’s many featured amenities, including: the Municipal Complex, Police Department, Library, Lyric Theatre, Virginia Tech, Squires Student Center, the Huckleberry Trail, and the new Farmer’s Market. These signs will also provide directions to nearby parking facilities.

Joint Marketing Venture Between Homebuilders and Code Officials

The New River Valley Home Builders Association (NRVHBA) and Region II – Virginia Building Code Officials Organization led by Building Official, Cathy Cook, recently embarked on a joint marketing venture. This is the first time that the two groups have worked together in this way. The marketing campaign will encourage membership in both organizations while better educating citizens on building issues. “How-to” clinics will be offered at the NRVHBA Home Show including speakers from both organizations along with the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) and citizens from Blacksburg. Participants will talk about their experiences – both good and bad. In addition, for the first time both groups will share a booth where citizens can obtain information and meet representatives of both organizations. “What You Should Know” citizen’s classes will also be offered on how to select contractors, what questions to ask your Building Officials before you start your project and how to keep your project on track. Working together, the two organizations are promoting “Better Homes. Safer Communities”.

Business License Renewals – The Town mailed 1,241 business license renewals on January 13th. The 2010 Business License renewals are due March 1, 2010.

Traffic Signal Battery Backup – Battery backup installations in Town traffic signals were completed last month. This was a project funded by 2008 Revenue sharing funds in which every local dollar was matched with a VDOT dollar
