One suggestion made to cut down on drinking was to raise the price. Tax increases were mentioned. It is important to point out that direct taxes on alcohol is the sole responsibility of the Commonwealth of Virginia. At the local level, the most we can do is raise taxes in an indirect way such as the meals tax. But, that also has the effect of driving the cost of food up and hurting local restaurants.
